Fostermasts Ltd was formerly
known as the mast department of A Foster & Co Ltd. "Fosters" is New Zealand's longest serving marine supplier.
Established in
1907 by Alex Foster, the business was originally a small marine and engineering
supplies agency. Bill Teixeira joined Alex in 1917 and when the two engineers
retired in the 1950s they approached Sid Street to take over the chandlery business.
Present directors, John Street and Peter Robertson, have steered the company towards its status as a leading supplier of marine equipment and today Fosters represent many of the world's leading suppliers of performance sailing hardware. They do however maintain the company's traditional 'face' and continue to stock time honoured boatbuilding products.
Fosters has recently been purchased by Harken Yacht Equipment. Harken NZ shall continue to be a chandlery (Fosters Chandlery) but is also the New Zealand sales and service centre for Harken.
Fosters originally built their spars on the floor of
the classic building situated on Auckland's Fanshawe Street. The
practical restrictions with this loft became evident when sections had
to be extended out of the windows! The present mast loft was
established in the mid 80s to cater for the increasing demand for yacht
spars and has been responsible for providing outstanding aluminium spar
making and rigging service ever since.
In order to better serve their customers as a sole trading entity, on the 1st of April 2005 the limited company "Fostermasts" was formed. The two operations (Fostermasts and A Foster & Co) work closely together and continue to provide high quality products and service to the marine industry both locally and abroad.
